SO Here’s a nice little seasonal nugget of information for those of us who reside in the DC-ishhh area! Or for any of you thrill seekers out there really. The photo above depicts the MOST HAUNTED HOTEL in the region. Allegedly. Please meet the Martha Washington Inn tucked quaintly in Abingdon, VA. Built in 1832 at a then-princely sum of $15,000, the hotel has seen her fair share of drama over the course of the past 189 years. The Martha Washington was originally a private residence then was sold to serve as a women’s college. She was asked to play host as a hospital and barracks during the Civil War and later as the residence for visiting actors of the Barter Theatre. The hotel’s guests from the Civil War era are said to have never checked out. There’s the Phantom Horse which appears only on moonless nights awaiting at front of the hotel for his owner, a Union soldier who lost his life at that exact spot in 1864. Then there’s the Trail of Reappearing Mud in the main hallway, supposed indications of an injured soldier hobbling on a single crutch seeking help. Down in the basement, the Angry Spirit in the tunnel that connects the hotel to the Barter Theatre makes known his grievance for having fallen victim to a fatal tunnel ceiling collapse in the early 1900s. Again, Supposedly. And the most famous ghost: The Yankee Sweetheart. Her telltale sign is violin music wafting gently throughout the hotel, most prominently Room 403. That’s the room where she cared for an comforted a mortally wounded soldier she was to fall in love with. As he slipped away, his final wish was “Play something, Beth. I’m going!”. The violin solo continues to this day with performances nightly. So who’s IN? The Martha Washington Inn & Spa and YOU! Nightly rate start at $203. Spine-tingling apparitions and rousing (from your sleep) string concertos free of charge.
